Ybarra is a good choice
With Sherri Ybarra throwing her hat into the ring, there are now three Republicans and one Democrat vying to replace Tom Luna as Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Ybarra, of course, is well known around here, in part for the way she turned West Elementary School from a perennial F grade in the Annual Yearly Progress evaluations to a top performing four-star school. She knows what it takes to get kids to learn, and as the district's director of curriculum she has direct contact with the federal and state laws that get in the way of that. Plus, she's a home-town girl, so we're probably going to back her pretty strongly.
She'll face Randy Jensen, a highly regarded middle school principal from American Falls who is supporting Gov. Otter's education task force recommendations, and John Eynon, a former Constitution Party officer from Cottonwood who filed as a Republican in order to run, essentially, against the Common Core standards.
The winner in the primary will face Democrat Jana Jones, who barely lost to Luna the last time around.
With Ybarra at the top of our list, at least three of the four will do well for Idaho education.
