"Bear Gun ....

Small, yes, but properly employed, very effective.

My personal favorite bear defense gun has always been my Beretta Jetfire in .22 short!

I've found over the years when hiking in bear country I never leave home without it.

While other hikers haul around heavy large caliber rifles I dont even notice it in my pocket.

Of course we all know the first rule when hiking in the wilderness is to use the "Buddy System".

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this it means you NEVER hike alone, you bring a friend or companion, even an in-law.

That way if something happens there is someone to go get help.

I remember one time hiking with my brother-in-law in northern British Columbia .

Out of nowhere came this huge brown bear and boy was she MAD!

We must have been near one of her cubs.

Anyway, if I had not had my little Jetfire with me I'm sure I wouldnt be here today.

That's right, one shot to my brother-in-law's knee cap and I was able to escape by just walking at a brisk pace.

Its one of the best pistols in my safe!"

I ran into that same story line from an Eskimo in Quinhagak Alaska 20 years ago. Problem was I couldn't out run him :-)

I was wondering where you were going with this one and now I know. Ever hear of the run down hill theory?

Yes I believe I have, but it's pretty flat around Quinhagak The Airport - Elev. 42

Bethel Airport (60 airmiles away) -- Elev. 126

I'm thinking ain't NOTHING moving Up or DOWNHILL in that country right now.

Current Weather in Quinhagak - -24 F

Current Weather in Bethel- -23 F. :-)

I was born September 17, 1949 in Caldwell, Idaho. Like Idaho's climate, I have a dry sense of humor. It may be a result of faulty genetics, but I come from sturdy stock. My great grandfather once served as a postmaster right on the line between Camas and Elmore Counties and is buried on what was once his land. According to research my only sibling has done, we generally agree that he started his westward trek in Indiana sometime after 1838 and died of pneumonia in 1911. If Google earth is correct, there are at least 2.5 million average steps between Ripley County, Indiana and his gravesite.
