What ever happened to the whole truth??

Posted Sunday, February 19, 2012, at 8:03 AM

This blog is because I got an e-mail this morning from a friend here on the blogs and it had a video attached. I watched the video, and replied "What can I say. But the fact is, the people in his district have spoken and no one has the right to over rule them."

A few minutes after send the reply, I realized that I had taken the video at face value and didn't research it or the subject of the video. This behavior is becoming more and more common today. The 30 second sound bite and the internet have lead to campaigns based on half truths and what could be considered almost bald faced lies, if all the pertinent information was included.

This was my next response to the sender of the video I got, after I did some research.

"In December 2009, Johnson revealed that he had been battling Hepatitis C for over a decade, which resulted in slow speech and a tendency to regularly get "lost in thought in the middle of a discussion".[23] Johnson said that he learned he had the disease in 1998 but does not know how he contracted it. The disease has damaged his liver and led to thyroid problems.[23] He was treated with a combination of ribavirin and interferon at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.[23] In February 2010, Johnson finished an experimental treatment for Hepatitis C, resulting in weight gain and increased energy."

It only took about 90 seconds to find this information. Have we become so lazy or rabid partisan that we can't can't do a little research today?

Is this the future of the Republic? Ruled by sound bites and half truths, or out right lies? An electorate to lazy to gather any other information to determine the truth?

A whole blog was written not long ago based on an e-mail full of faulty information. It took about 5 minutes I think to refute the 2 untruths presented.

This campaign, more than any other I can remember seems to based on destroying the other guy, with little if any regards to the truth or whether the whole issue is pertinent.

IS THIS BEHAVIOR WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE REPUBLIC?

WE THE PEOPLE BEING FED AND LEAD BY LIES AND HALF TRUTHS?

Wake up and do a little independent research. That means from both sides of the aisle. Somewhere in between lies the truth.

A short after thought. When I was growing up, the behavior I described above was called GOSSIPING.

Buckshot, I'm sure this happens on both sides on a regular basis. As for the tax exempt thing, most super pacs have an arm that is a 501(c)(3) organization, and therefor don't have to disclose donors. While this blog was inspired by what I would consider an attack video, I did make a point of taking aim at both sides.

All too often, the most partisan will ignore things that run counter to their views.

At this point winning at all cost is a rampant disease affecting our politics. Complete facts matter little. Rhetoric rules.

You have accused me of being an Obama supporter and a supporter of the healthcare law. I have never on these blogs shown any support for Obama or the healthcare law, but your accusations are simply a tool to try and discredit me.

Roy,

Thanks for the post.

There is much to be said for the speed with which the tools we have available today can dispell out of context half truths OR uncover blatant illusions which give way to half truths taken out of context.

TRUTH has rarely come to me in full context and when it did, I rarely had the strength to recognize its value.

Or so it seems.

I guess the point that you are making Roy is that each side has a manure pile. The question is whose is bigger?

thousands of e-mails and clips get shared over the internet each minute and most of it is gossip. What I base my information on, is if I actually have read it by two different sources or heard it myself from the person in question's lips.

My main objection is that like Zook, I think that the entire information conveyed by the media is lopsided. The rules are changed to suit a person's agenda. I include all of those whose job it is to present an objective point of view.

We are all getting tired of the "spin" cycle that is politics.

I heard it reported on the news that Governor Chris Christie had the flags in NJ flown at half mast for Whitney Houston's Death. Is this true or false reporting? I never heard anyone on cnn msnbc, or fox news report anything different so are they all on the same page?

I'm an almost 61 year old transplant from California 6 1/2 years ago. I work in road construction, those dastardly flaggers. My family roots go back to New England farms, not the big city. The last town I lived in when in California grew from 16K to 40K in 10 years, and that was enough to drive me out. I don't engage in or tolerate name calling. Name calling reduces an adult discussion to grade school play yard level. I have never served in the military, but have family members who have, dating back to WW1. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am neither extremely Liberal or Conservative. I am raising my 16 year old grandson, not what I expected at this age, and dealing with those issues as well as my health and near retirement which are 2 things I intend to talk about. I decided to try my hand at this thanks to the warm welcome I have received on Mike's blog. When I take a position, I will defend it until I am shown that I am mistaken, and when that happens, I apologize. There are other things about me that will come out over time I'm sure.
