Are we really as civilized as we proclaim to be???Posted Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at 1:43 PM
This subject matter will strike a nerve with some on these blogs, and if it causes you distress, I apologize, but the issue needs to be addressed.
We proclaim to be civilized and to hold the high ground to the world, but we stand idly by while the situation in the linked article grows. This is a real issue that takes it toll on every family, every taxpayer, and a large number of businesses. Just like the last blog, this deals with money and morals. Where is our nation's moral compass starting to point? Are on the road back to the dark ages of state and privately run asylums? Lock them up and forget they exist? Will we decide that's it's more economical to lock them up than treat them? What is your opinion?, What is your solution?, or would you rather pretend it doesn't exist?

I work in road construction, those dastardly flaggers. My family roots go back to New England farms, not the big city. The last town I lived in when in California grew from 16K to 40K in 10 years, and that was enough to drive me out. I don't engage in or tolerate name calling. Name calling reduces an adult discussion to grade school play yard level.
I have never served in the military, but have family members who have, dating back to WW1. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am neither extremely Liberal or Conservative. I am raising my 16 year old grandson, not what I expected at this age, and dealing with those issues as well as my health and near retirement which are 2 things I intend to talk about. I decided to try my hand at this thanks to the warm welcome I have received on Mike's blog. When I take a position, I will defend it until I am shown that I am mistaken, and when that happens, I apologize. There are other things about me that will come out over time I'm sure.

I can't support the current band of thieves and liars, elected and un-elected. There are 3 or 4 more blogs coming.
On a national level I understand what you're saying, but what about right here in our own backyard? Look at the cuts in mental health services in Idaho.
The whole issue is about cuts in mental health services. Just look here in Idaho. These cuts may end up being penny wise, pound foolish in the long run.
How do you treat a broken chair? How do you treat a rock that won't do what you want it to do? How do you treat an idea that doesn't work? How do you treat a three-legged dog or a half-witted offspring? Only YOU know the answer to that question...and, unless you want to make it public, it's nobody's business but your's.
I think that alot of money gets spent on housing all of society's drop outs and lawbreakers. We don't treat them so they can go back into society, we just lock them up and forget about them! Way too much government moneys gets spent on the food and uniforms for these people. If we treated them like human beings and prepared them with programs so they can go back, then I believe we will spend less money on them and in turn we will behave like civilized people and they get civilized. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?
Mike, what does your comment have to do with the treatment of the mentally ill in this country?
