Sighs of relief
Today started off so good.
I bounced out of bed early, completed a forgotten class project, grabbed breakfast, and found a GREAT parking spot for class. I was ready to learn, then bounce of to my new job, which I love.
Then about 25 minutes before class was to end, a lot of people began piling into the auditorium where my class meets.
"The police evacuated us from our classroom. They told us to come here and keep the door locked."
You could feel the atmosphere in the room plummet. Then the OU Emergency system sent everyone a text message.
There'd been a (suspected) shooting on campus, in the building next to ours.
Thankfully, so thankfully, the sound of shots was likely machine backfire from some campus construction. One person was treated in the ambulance, having had a seizure in our building.
That the event didn't actually occur does not take away how real it felt in that half hour before the president of the university came in to tell us it was OK. We're making jokes and readying ourselves for appealing parking tickets (my car was in a barricaded zone, and will have to remain at a now-expired meter until I get off work). But I know many of us are counting our blessings. The university snapped into action, and I've never felt more safe than I do at OU.
It didn't mean to be, but today was one of those life-affirming days. And I'm thankful to be here.
