WWJD? Apparently, nothing.
I'm not going to pretend I know everything about politics, but I do have a problem I'd like someone to explain to me.
From what I gather, the GOP was formed under Christian values, correct?
Well, following that old mantra, What Would Jesus Do?, I would have to see maybe the GOP has fallen a bit far from that beginning moral.
One would expect a moral person to want to help, knowing full well that there will be those abusing the system.
Unfortunately the right is against all help. They scream "SOCIALISM!!" every time a public service is introduced. They screamed it at the Social Security Act of 1965.
I'm not an advocate for socialism, don't get me wrong. I understand full well socialism will never work to its theoretical potential. But some practices derived from socialism are good for countries. If we didn't practice a little socialism, we wouldn't need taxes. Hurray, right?
Wrong. Public schools. GONE. If you're born into a poor family, that means you will not have the opportunity to move up unless you can bum enough money to pay for school. Scholarships and things of that nature. Go away. Helping people with our money, spreading wealth? SOCIALISM!
Public restrooms? Sorry, you'll have to wait until you get home or can find a person willing to let you use theirs, or otherwise we could charge restrooms on a per-use basis.
Public sidewalks and roads? No. If you can't afford a fee to use the roads, sidewalks, or otherwise, you may as well stay home. Only those who can work enough and make their own can use those, because we aren't all contributing for each other.
I lean to the GOP in a few aspects, like limited government intervention. But I do admit that we NEED the government, just like they need us. C.S. Lewis once said, "Good rulers need good people, and good people need good rulers."
When we become "good people", we can elect "good rulers" and most of us will win.
Whether anyone likes it or not, there is an issue in the healthcare system, and we, as moral human beings (and if you're religious, you better be listening) need to step up and help our fellow man.
Most immigrants are looking for a better life. I, for one, am incredibly proud to be in a country others would die to be in, others would risk imprisonment, prejudice, and abuse to live in or to give their families a chance to live in. No, those who enter illegally should not be granted amnesty. There are rules. But we make it so difficult for them. We need stricter illegal immigrant laws, better enforcement AND a less complicated immigration system.
Party politics frustrates me like no other, because there's not nice medium, no morals. Just the left and right, red and blue, liberal and conservative. Until we realize we aren't bound by this ridiculous system, until we realize we need to get over our "party allegiance", we will never be indivisible, standing for liberty and justice FOR ALL.
What would Jesus do?
