Family Time
The other day I was feeling a little blah. Life seemed rather plain and it was kind of bothering me. So I sat down and thought about what happens in my life on a regular day. I was able to break up my day into ten areas. It goes as follows:
I don't know about anybody else but that doesn't exactly sound like a fun filled day. Going to work seemed like a major drag. I would come home and then my focus would shift to getting my kids into bed so that I could relax. If I didn't get them to bed by the time I wanted then I would get upset and feel as though my whole evening was ruined. Well the other day I was once again reminded that I was being selfish and only thinking about my own needs but mostly my wants. We were having family home evening and the lesson was on baby Moses. After teaching the kids about it we decided we were going to act it out. The parts were assigned as follows: My wife was the Pharaoh's daughter, I was Moses' sister, my son was the Pharaoh, and my daughter was baby Moses. My daughter was sitting in the laundry basket with her blanket while she floated down the pretend river on our carpet. However this was a difficult journey for her because the Pharaoh (my son) was determined to follow through with his plan to kill all of the baby boys so he kept trying to attack her while in the laundry basket. While this ended up in pure chaos in was absolutely the most fun I had all day long.
Family time is so important so why do we often neglect it? I realized that I was coming home and viewing my family as another obstacle to overcome in order for me to relax. My selfishness was taking away time I needed to spend with my lovely wife and children. I would come home and focus on what I felt needed to be done and what I wanted to do. I wasn't being a bad husband or father but I wasn't being a good one either. Our families are here to enjoy life with and to make special memories. We can't get caught up in our mundane lives and forget what is really important. We need to take time for our children. It is ok to get on our hands and knees and give our kids horsey rides. It is ok to laugh and make some messes and clean up later. It is ok to turn off the television and get out a game or to just talk about our day. It is ok to just hang out at home with the family rather than stressing out over our to do list. The sooner we realize this lesson the sooner we will be able to enjoy our families. I was viewing my family as an obstacle when all along the only obstacle in my way was my own selfishness. Our families are wonderful and are full of amazing people if we decide to take some time to see it for ourselves.
We Need to Interact With our Kids We Need to Interact With our Kids I love fall for one reason and one reason only, the weather. I love the cooler days and the colder nights. What I don't like about fall is that it signifies the end of the baseball season. I am really more of a spring kind of guy if you didn't already guess. ...
Parenting + Stress = Patience? Have any of you ever been in Walmart the day before Christmas? If your answer is no then consider yourself lucky because it is kind of how I would imagine hell. People are packed in the aisles like sardines and they all turn into angry procrastinators who are not able to remember their manners. ...
Take A Rip And Give It A Ride! The score was 8-3 in the last inning. With two outs already the home team wasn't feeling very confident, and then it happened. The next player up to bat got a base hit. Then the next guy got a hit and so did the next. The hit parade was on and things were becoming quite interesting. ...
Let's Make Some Changes America! Our economy is in troubled times. People are losing their jobs and looking to the government to bail them out. The government is scrambling to try and fix the problem but has that "Deer in a Headlight Look" and overcompensates with high dollar spending. ...
Verbal Abuse Is Common Among Us Verbal Abuse is Common Among Us I am sure that everyone has heard the very popular saying, "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me". Whoever said this must be emotionally numb. Getting hit by objects most definitely hurts and is not how I like to spend my free time, but usually the pain is temporary and the wounds heal. ...
Let's Wake Up and Appreciate What We Have! Appreciate Our Families This past summer I have become a big believer in that old saying "You don't know what you've got till it's gone". My wife and kids are visiting some family members and I am home all alone. When I heard that this was going to happen I was a little excited. ...
Talking- What A Novel Idea! Talking- What a Novel Idea One of the biggest causes of our problems in many aspects of our lives is the lack of ability to communicate effectively. We often like to use other forms of communicating such as yelling, screaming, threatening and even hitting. ...
Don't Be Dumb! Don't Be Dumb Many of you may have already seen this picture but for those of you who haven't I will try my best to explain it to you. There was a newspaper article discussing the noise level of jackhammers in a neighborhood. There was a lady who was pregnant and she was concerned that the loud noise would have a negative impact on her unborn child. ...
Focus On The Good Why do we solely focus on the bad? In the spring of 1998, my senior year in high school, I played the best baseball game of my entire life. I was 4 for 6 with the bat, including one homerun, one double, and two singles. Not to shabby for a skinny kid that was at the bottom of the batting order. ...
