The Alvord Ranch

Posted Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 10:35 PM

We got back last night from a 3 week stay in Fields, Oregon.  It was a beautiful place, and I want badly to go back.

I don't know if you've heard of Fields or New Princeton, or Princeton.  It's a very remote area, and Fields is 25 miles from where we stayed, along a gravel road.

Fields is a building that serves as a cafĂ© where you can get GREAT food, (one being a "World Famous" milkshake, which I can vouch for) a United States Post Office, and a small market.  The folks are friendly and the place is quaint.  In 2 weeks, I managed to get there twice.  Wayne and I went once, cause I was in desperate need of lettuce.  I didn't really expect they'd have any, but they did.  They also had a few other things (forgot to say they had a liquor store) and when we found they had the "World Famous" milkshakes, I had to verify that.  I had an Oreo Cookie/Reeses, and it was AWESOME!     The folks were so friendly, we sat and talked with them, and found that one was from Mtn. Home ...years ago.  So, it's a darn small world.

On that drive, we found the land to be more and more beautiful.

We were gathering the yearlings that we will then go to Cascade to take care of for the summer.  The Alvord Ranch hosts several people from all over the world.  We  had guests from Switzerland, Germany and several states in the U.S.  What everyone shared was a love of the life that we live.  They don't have the opportunity to live it, but they are able to 'live' it while they visit.  We spent a lot of time with them, and got to become friends with them.  Many learned branding, and all had a great time.

This is the guests bringing the cattle.

The ranch is something to see.  Very hospitable, and comfortable.

This barn is pretty famous.  I certainly loved it.

These little cabins were built from the most available source, rock.

But inside, they are darn nice.

As you can see, I like the barn!

Our horses pretty much thought they were in Heaven

As did my dogs, that love to play in the water and the mud

This is the house we had to ourselves.  Yeah, I know, it's a rough life!

I don't think I've mentioned, but this ranch is owned by Paul and Toni Davis.  They are of the Julia Davis Family.  The land that the Julia Davis Park is on in Boise was donated years ago in Julia Davis's name.

What do you suppose they are discussing?

Every now and then, in the middle of work, I'd look up and see this scenery all around us.  I couldn't help take a picture and thank God for these spectacular gifts.  I do so appreciate them.

Things happen.  Like this Cow who lost her calf.  And we had calves that had to be nursed.  She didn't want to, but we all have to do things we don't like

I have some pretty darn loyal friends, who love the same things I do.  Sharon made the 5 hour drive to come see the Famous Alvord Ranch, and stay with me a few days.

You made me think of our own branding days. I love the pics.

Beautiful Pictures Jessie. I don't know much about farming or ranching so there's a lot I don't understand.

Can any one stay at this ranch, even if they aren't there to work? Did you go there to trade or buy yearlings?

Sorry for my questions I'm just curious that's all and if you don't want to answer that's ok too. :)

yes he did but i'm not sure if this is the one. he was there in 68 if it is. thanks for the pictures.

Marilyn, yep anyone can stay there for a vacation type thing. I can message you some details later. Lots do go there just to hike and enjoy the scenery.

I did not know Claude Dallas was ever there. If it was 68 it may have been in Davis hands. Might not quite have been. I will investigate into that. We'll be there again in the Fall.

The yearlings were raised there on the Alvord, were then shipped here to Cascade (where we are now. There are actually 2 Davis brothers there fairly close. The other brother ranch is called the Khunie. Those yearlings were also shipped here. We will care for about 3500 during this summer. Then they sale. Then we start over with next years yearlings.

Skeeter! Haven't heard from you for awhile. Thx for chiming in!

Bonnie I thought you'd enjoy.

I always look but am busy and don't always say anything. I remember the Wilson's were there when he was, both in 68 and 81 when he was on the run, after the shootings. I think he was escorted into court by one of the Wilsons.

Thx for info Skeeter. Davis's bought the Alvord in 70 I believe. So Tom & Jemima would have been there in 81. Now Paul & Toni are there now. Paul may have been there in 81, but would have been about 14-15. He was there since he was 4. Now that I'm doing the math ...he was probably there in 71. Just after Claude. All somewhat intertwined.

One of the current owners, Leilani, wrote a book "Shadow of Steens" very interesting

Forgot to say that Coco Wilson (Constantine) was the one who took Claude to court. She was actually on a neighboring ranch, The Man Lake Ranch. I met her grandson in law, John. He's married to her granddaughter. I also met Eli, her great grandson, who is 4. He was horseback all day & a sweet tough little guy who says he lives at "Man Wake" took me a minute to get it.

I am interested in this Community, County, and the beautiful state of Idaho. Most of my photos will be in Idaho, but from time to time, they will be my vacations aay from Idaho. You'll see lots of my Children and Grand children, along with others in my family. Of course there will be horses and horse related things, and things I photo'd horseback.
