I am interested in this Community, County, and the beautiful state of Idaho. Most of my photos will be in Idaho, but from time to time, they will be my vacations aay from Idaho. You'll see lots of my Children and Grand children, along with others in my family. Of course there will be horses and horse related things, and things I photo'd horseback.

Looking for 4-H Kids

We ride at the Optimist Park just about every Monday evening starting at 6:00.  The kids that come and learn have a great time!  We practice sorting and controlling calves, and basic horsemanship, on up to higher levels of showing. We play games also, and that is always a hit!  If you know of a child that has a horse and needs some guidance, we welcome them.  If you know of a child that might benefit from working with a horse, bring them to watch and see what we can do.

If you just want to see some fun times and show your support, you are welcome just to come and watch.  These are some great kids demonstrating some great horsemanship.  They love to be watched and praised.  We've been having an audience lately and more is better!  We might even ask you to help and/or put you to work!

  • Nice job Jessie. It is a shame that more kids are not involved. If you need a horse I have two that would work (for free). Just let me know and I will haul them in. What a great program for the youth. Horses/animals can teach young people a lot. GREAT program. Good luck.

    So, you sold your horse?!?! I was shocked. She went to a great home.

    Thanks Tracy, I will keep those horses in mind. We can use more most of the time. What kind of details were you thinking?

    There are more kids involed than those pictured. Not many more, but these pictured are just the ones that WE are working with. Overall though, there are only about 20. I remember when my kids were in 4-H there were over 100. I would love to see it like that again, hence the blog here. (my way of looking around)

    No, Planet hasn't been sold, and I"m actually rethinking it, as she's working out well as a lesson horse. THAT isn't something I ever thought would happen, hot headed as she could be. But as you know, they sense the rider and take care if need be. (at least some times) I wouldn't have pegged her for that type of horse, but she is soooo careful with them, I'm very proud of her. So, maybe I"ll keep her. At her age, I just thought it would be good for her to find a new home with someone who might like to use her for 4-H. At 15, she's perfect .... In my eyes, they all have to pay there way!

    I gave Eclipse to a great friend, who needed him, thought he's still in town.

    I've looked back over the blog and realized you thought I sold Eclipse. Nope, Sharon was destined to have him, so it is.

    Planet is for sale.... I've blogged it elsewhere, so I thought that's what you meant.

    Though now she is leased (free) thru the summer to a 4-H member, which is even better.

  • The decline in 4-H horse kids started when it was decided that clover buds couldn't show large animals. When the younger brothers and sisters couldn't show like the big kids, they lost interest. No clover buds were ever hurt that I know of. It was a big step backward for 4-H.

    Goldtooth, I didn't say that, but I do agree with your opinion. My own kids were showing and having a great time starting at the ages of 3 and 5. Then there younger brother also started showing when he was 3,.... THEN that change happened, and yes....that seemed to be a death toll for 4-H membership.

    The reason was liability...and the hazards on small children horseback. Part of me got the reason..... I know it's dangerous. My own family has had it's fair share of hospital bills attributed to horses. NOT 4-H. In a "suit happy" environment, that became the worry.

    The part of me that grew up with horses, took responsibility for our own health. I knew I would never sue the University, since I knowingly took my kids and horses....etc..... But I guess there are those that would. Ridiculous as that is.

    Having said that.... Horses are NOT the only reason I had trips to the emergency room. My children were physically active, and pushed limits in most of their activities. Bicycles, Motorcycles, hiking, skiing, skateboards, along with horses were the catalyst for many of our trips to ER.

    I myself always used reasonable care...and I taught my kids as much as I could...but we always knew the risk. Would they have quit? Heck no. They loved it!

    What's the answer? I don't know, but I keep working at it! I try to make it as fun as possible, and always be encouraging ..... I hope it's not doomed....

    On the bright side, this blog got me 3 new members!
