Reason's For giving up your Dog ! Grrrrr !

My Princess Chloe
The way the economy is these day's some people will have to give up their dog they just don't have the money to take proper care of it any more and dog food can get expensive.

I understand this !

What bothers me is some of the other reasons people are giving up their dogs.

Here's an example: We are having a new baby and we need to re-home our little dog Princess. She is a great little dog Chi/Maltese Mix and we love her so much.

She sleeps in bed with us every night she is our baby. She loves to be held, loves to go for walks and loves to ride in the car. You must have a fenced in yard and she is not to be left out alone as she is an indoor dog.

We would love to keep her, however it will be just to much for us to keep her after the baby is born.

She is 4 yrs old, weighs 7 lbs. She is not fixed so if your looking to adopt a dog who you want to breed, she would make a great new mommy.

We are only asking $450.00 re-homing fee to pay for what we already have put into her. I will throw in her bed, her toys, leash and collar and whatever dog food we have left over.

It breaks my heart to have to re-home her.

These type ad's just horrify me ! How can someone give up their dog they had for years just because they are having a baby.

Then there are other reason's people give up their pet's. Some only had their dog a little while and are ready to give it up.

Some other reasons I have seen:

1. Moving into an apartment and can't take the dog with them. (why not look for a place that allows dogs)

2. My husband is allergic to the dog

3. My landlord say's I can't keep my dog

4. My dog keeps escaping so I need to find him a new home

5. My husband hates dogs

6. We can't get our little poochy trained, he jumps on people and potty's in the house.

Are people telling the truth in these type ad's or are they covering up the fact they can no longer afford to care for their pets?

I believe when you adopt a dog you are taking on the responsibility of that dog until his time comes.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this !

I have never really understood why people treat there dogs better than they do their own children. however, i think its horrible to make up excuses to get rid of the dog that you took full responsibility for. If you are going to take an animal you should be held liable for taking care of it. however, i do think if you cant afford to take care of your animal you should give it to someone who can.

We just got a new pup this weekend (mixed breed, not from a breeder). She is cute and smart. She will be around 130-200 pounds once fully grown (she is 8 weeks now). When I take in an animal it is until the end of that animals life. I consider my dogs to be part of our family and I think they have a better life at my house than some children and never want for anything.

Things happen in life. Life throws many curves. However, I would never give up one of my dogs unless something was going on where I was not able to provide for it (shots, food, etc.). I love all of my animals and they are family. Baby made 4!!

WB-could not agree more! I believe that I will name her Hope as she reminds me daily (around 2 A.M.) just how much she loves me. I just love her. Lab, Mastiff and St. Bernard...we need a larger house, a larger bed and a much larger couch. I would not trade her for the world. I like you am also lucky to have them...all of them. She was left in a hot car...I am glad they found her before it was too late. People!!!!

OM Thank you for taking in your new dog. Now he has a good home and some one to love him.

I got a new dog about a month and a half ago. A little chihuahua that was nothing but skin and bones and had a cattle prod used on him. I don't know anything about cattle prods however someone told me that if there had been one used on him, he would of been dead ! We got him fixed and a dental done on him at Knights, and they gave us a really good deal! Now we have 3 yorkies and 2 chihuahua's.

Good thing we live outside the city or we would be over our limit. lol !

MsMarylin, congrats to you as well. Wow...a cattle prod on such a little dog. That person probably should have had one used on them a time or 2. It is way worse than any electric fence shock and probably could have killed him. I am glad that you took him in and that he also has a family to love him. Every animal deserves a chance. Normally a bad owner makes a "bad dog" since they learn directly from us. I would not trade any of my gang for a million bucks.

Thanks for doing your blog. Keep up the good work and hug your new baby for me please.

We named our new addition Coco and he still has a couple marks on him from the cattle prod. He also is scared to be picked up so I am just letting him go at his own pace.... He does however follow me around and sleeps in bed with us. I have a little yorkie girl we got from a puppy mill years ago. It took 2 years before she would trust us. We had to corner her to pick her up... At that time she was our 4th puppy mill dog....

hmmmmm maybe my next blog will be about puppy mills

MsM...good for you and thanks for your blog. You are refreshing even when you write about the things that are not so great in the world of animals. Thank you for your thoughts. Much love to Coco. He will get over the bad things. I am glad he is in such a great home! Have a great day.

I love Knights Vet... very good people and they have always treated us very nice.. going out of there way to keep the cost down whenever they could.

We even got a sympathy card when our 16 year old Shih Tzu died in February..she had gone there all her life.

MsM... my parents owned Chihuahua's. They were always rescues. I believe when a dog finds a good person they know it....they are much smarter in that department than we are.

I would much rather say, I never met a dog that didn't like me than I never met a person that didn't... I can fool people.....

I too use Knight's and love it there. They are very compassionate. Thanks for the article Marilyn! It makes me happy at the end of the day to go home and find my dog happy to see me, wagging her tail. Dogs give so much love and ask so little in return!
