Funding Cutbacks in Idaho SchoolsPosted Monday, January 18, 2010, at 12:50 AM
According to the Idaho Statesman... "Otter said Thursday that he'll announce more funding cuts for this year in Monday's State of the State address, though he won't say how severe they will be or how much they will affect public education...... ...Some lawmakers predict that public schools could face an unprecedented 8 to 10 percent budget reduction for the fiscal year that starts this summer - a cut that would almost certainly mean fewer teachers or school days."
With the economy still in a bad state and funding cuts everywhere, the last place that should be cut would be education. Education has the biggest impact on every other aspect of our daily lives. At the point where the state government reduces education standards, (I.e. cutting programs, reducing school days, and reducing student/teacher ratio) the quality of the future work force can only amount to what we put into it. When 'cutting programs' was mentioned earlier, it wasn't just extracircular programs that are of less 'importance' than core programs. These core programs like those aimed at improving math skills - could be suspended or reduced until public education finances improve. When according to Tom Luna, state schools superintendent, "they are improving student achievement." If it absolutely comes down to it, unfortunately taxes raises to help the deficit rather than cutting the budget to the point where it hurts us rather than helps us. These cuts will be a huge blow to our state's already low ranking education system. "we must do whatever we can to protect the educational opportunities and safeguard the potential of the next generation of Idahoans -- our children and grandchildren," said Gov. Otter. Keeping in mind that there is only so much that can be done, and not everyone will be happy... there becomes a point where talk is cheap. I would like to blog about the WECRD updates and news. I would also talk about MHHS news. And any hot topic issues that come up in town.
I am a 17 year old junior. I love to write, read and have fun. I am the debate captain, I am a staff reporter for the Tiger Tribune. I an a National Honor Society member. Right after I posted this blog, I read Kelly Everitt's blog on the same subject and saw how similar they are. I promise I had no clue what his blog said when I wrote this. lol. Sorry Mr. Everitt, I guess we just really have the same opinion on these cuts.
Perhaps there would be more money for the schools if we were not being sucked dry by the WECRD Board. I would direct you to my blog.
I don't mean to be the fly in the ointment, but I think you should take a good look at your blog description. The description is littered with a ton of grammer errors, such as i versus I, and starting a sentence with an And.
Just a suggestion.
maybeso..........I know. lol. I typed it when i first got my blog (last year) and just posted it without proof reading it. I didn't realize you couldn't edit it. But if you read my actual blog, you won't find the same. Sorry about that.
I do that myself from time to time. If you get in a hurry, or are tired, you can actually display a little bit of your human side and commit a typo!
First thing I noticed when I discontinued my own blog a year or so back. When you have your OWN, there IS an "edit" avenue, but when you just "chime-in", ya gotta get it right the first time you post it.
I find these education cuts to be pretty disturbing. You, and the young people are our future. Our education system is in trouble, and has been in trouble, for years.
A fancy building does not educate children. They need teachers, books, computers, etc. These funding cuts are a disaster. Otter should take a cut in pay, lower what he gets per month for a home (or to "maintain" a home), and cut some help BEFORE education is cut.
This is where less "pork" spending and useless appropriations comes in. Funny yoB how it is all okay until it changes your world or alters the course of your dreams and how you will reach your goals. This is why many of us are against out of control spending by Government who years down the road have nothing to show for years and years of taxes. Now it is a bit more clear to you. Life lessons. Wonderful are they not?
Mr. McMurtrey should also take a cut in pay, he makes nearly as much as the Governor.
Not to single out BSU, but what about Coash Peterson of BSU getting paid 1 million while professors and the dean are only getting 200-300K.
They figure he NEEDS more money to help feed the "blue and orange" ego.
Perhaps if your beloved WECRD was not part of the "pork" and worthless spending, there would be more money for education. So yoB, if choices have to be made do you think education is more important or supporting a "recreation district" that provides little to no recreation after about 10 years of taxing for it? In this economy, we cannot have it all. Choices and cuts will have to be made. So, kids that can read and do math or kids that can swim? I would rather invest in the things that I can see vs. things that probably will never be. It is called throwing good money after bad. Something I do not find to be much fun. You should have been at the last BM. The WECRD Board are like rats on a wheel. They run and run and run and never seem to get anywhere.
