Funding Cutbacks in Idaho Schools
Posted Monday, January 18, at 12:50 AM
According to the Idaho Statesman... "Otter said Thursday that he'll announce more funding cuts for this year in Monday's State of the State address, though he won't say how severe they will be or how much they will affect public education...... ...Some lawmakers predict that public schools could face an unprecedented 8 to 10 percent budget reduction for the fiscal year that starts this summer - a cut that would almost certainly mean fewer teachers or school days."

With the economy still in a bad state and funding cuts everywhere, the last place that should be cut would be education. Education has the biggest impact on every other aspect of our daily lives. At the point where the state government reduces education standards, (I.e. cutting programs, reducing school days, and reducing student/teacher ratio) the quality of the future work force can only amount to what we put into it.

When 'cutting programs' was mentioned earlier, it wasn't just extracircular programs that are of less 'importance' than core programs. These core programs like those aimed at improving math skills - could be suspended or reduced until public education finances improve. When according to Tom Luna, state schools superintendent, "they are improving student achievement."

If it absolutely comes down to it, unfortunately taxes raises to help the deficit rather than cutting the budget to the point where it hurts us rather than helps us. These cuts will be a huge blow to our state's already low ranking education system.

"we must do whatever we can to protect the educational opportunities and safeguard the potential of the next generation of Idahoans -- our children and grandchildren," said Gov. Otter. Keeping in mind that there is only so much that can be done, and not everyone will be happy... there becomes a point where talk is cheap.

Busy, Busy, Busy
Posted Saturday, October 24, at 7:10 PM

Its been awhile since I have been able to post. Unfortunately I'm not able to post on WECRD news. I have been too busy with school. But now that Homecoming week is over I am HOPING to be able to catch myself up and begin posting again! However, I am VERY happy with how my senior year is going so far. I just took my ACT today, and I'm definately ready to start getting ready for college!...

Clarification
Posted Wednesday, September 9, at 7:31 PM

I apparently haven't been very definitive on my position on the WECRD. I can understand why some may be confused by my rambling posts. Sometimes, I confuse myself. I thought I had, although, made it pretty clear that I am a supporter of the WECRD. I am NOT a volunteer, and I am NOT an opposer. ...

The great tool of debate
Posted Thursday, September 3, at 11:58 AM

Debate is an amazing tool to be used to help resolve situations in a healthy professional manner. It helps us see all arguments for and against issues and to be able to outweigh those pros and cons. When the debate is hindered by a personal slander or ridiculous claim without warrant, you lose the debate. ...

WECRD Budget Hearing
Posted Wednesday, August 26, at 10:23 PM

I was disapointed after coming home from the WECRD Budget Hearing and Board Meeting tonight. Disappointed not only in the WECRD Board, but as well as some of the adults who attended in opposition of the WECRD. First, I was glad to see decent answers from the Directors to most questions asked during the budget hearing. ...

School
Posted Wednesday, August 26, at 12:07 AM

Things at the high school aren't as bad as I thought they would be. Either that, or I just don't see all the problems. But as expected, it's almost impossible to get through the hall and lockers are spread out everywhere. I don't know where my locker is, I don't plan on using it. ...

It's been awhile...
Posted Sunday, August 16, at 1:10 AM

Summer is winding down, and I'm spending my last week working and helping out with Freshman oreientation. I feel obligated to appologize to everyone who reads my blogs/posts I have not been staying on top of the WECRD issue. I will try my hardest to get back on track once I'm in school, but I do have a busy senior year ahead...

Board Member?
Posted Wednesday, July 15, at 9:44 PM

When speaking(debating, arguing, fighting, complaining) abouth the WECRD most of the issues come back to what the board members are/aren't doing. I can see why people wouldn't want to be on the board. It's a hard position that opens you up to unfair criticism...

Dealing with death
Posted Tuesday, June 30, at 4:43 PM

As a teen, when each of my grandmothers died of course I was sad and upset. I understood, though, that each of them had lived long lives and they were coming to an end. I found it easier to understand and accept as a young person who hasn't had much experience with death...

Special WECRD Board Meeting
Posted Thursday, June 4, at 11:19 PM

It's summer time and I haven't had much time to blog. I am posting this a day late... but it's better than nothing. I also didn't take notes the entire meeting because it was going a bit slow and I had to get home to go to bed! Here's the agenda: June 2nd 2009...

I would like to blog about the WECRD updates and news. I would also talk about MHHS news. And any hot topic issues that come up in town. I am a 17 year old junior. I love to write, read and have fun. I am the debate captain, I am a staff reporter for the Tiger Tribune. I an a National Honor Society member. I love living in Mountain Home and hope to live here or in Glenns Ferry when i am older. When I graduate I want to go to college, but travel as much as I can.
