Goodbye Chile, Helo ArgentinaPosted Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 7:36 AM
After many sad goodbyes, last nights out, jokes from my friends about kidnapping, and so much more, I hopped on a bus yesterday morning for Mendoza, Argentina.
Crossing the Andes Mountains was captivating. Going from the hills on the coast, through the green pre-cordillera, through the Andes which looked like spikes shooting into the sky, then trhough the dry brown mountains after the border crossing (which went by with ease, didnt even get my bags searched), I was suprised to wake up from my nap in the bustling metropolis of Mendoza. This city is really beautiful. A huge plaza in the middle is the center of life. Al fresco cafe~s chattered all night long. A couple blocks away from my hostal I stumbled upon a rock concert in the park, which turned out to be a communist rally with quotes of Che Guevarra and Karl Marx read in between songs. Very interesting to see this type of event from an outsiders point of view. So much happened in Chile right before I left, its hard to explain in the short time I have on this computer. There was a public workers strike that jumbled up life when the garbage carriers, customs officials and a large array of government employees took to the streets in protest. The stray dogs had a hay day ripping through the massive mounds of garbage piling up. But that passed and life went on the same for me. The weekend before my host family had visitors from Canada, so we spent all weekend in town showing them around, having dinner parties at the house, going to beaches. It was so difficult finishing up with all my classes while at the same time trying to get ready for my month long backpacking trip and spending as much time with my friends as possible. But now here I am, Mendoza, Argentina, about to go on a bycicle wine tour, then take an overnight bus to Buenos Aires. Sometimes your writing ability makes me jealous.
I wrote about the Andies this morning and I struggled to find the words to desrribe the awsomeness of them and I settled with a one-sentence generic description somewhere along the lines of, they were really amazing.
The last adventures in South America... now between Chile + Argentina.
Mendoza, Argentina... Rock Concert... that sounds great. Mmm, the ideas of El Comandante Che Guevara y Karl Marx always are in the wind in a several places...
Chile... many things happened last weeks.... government employees in protest, but over time people and the government have reached an agreement. You are always informed... this is good.
Visitors from Canada... good, I hope they are enjoyed Chile ;)
It is difficult to do all the things at the same time: study and enjoy the country (and neighbor countries)... so... probably you are in Buenos Aires, Argentina right now... I hope you enjoy of Argentina too... "Bycicle Wine Tour": -> sport activity - sport girl - healthy life... that is good for you.
I think the big adventure in South America is finishing... you will come back to USA soon, right? There shall be no more stories of South America on this blog :(
Well, it is the 2:50am, Sunday. Here in Chile "Teleton" has finished a few minutes ago... I feel very happy with the results obtained in Teleton and now I am going to sleep with a smile of satisfaction :)
Ciao
Try to visit south of Mendoza and Neuquen Andes border, there are very amaizing places, and completey natural, as Villa Pehuenia, where you will find Araucaria woods, of hundreds of years, sorrounded by volcanoes. (you can rent a bike there to take a ride)
Enjoy your trip!!
