Nuclear Coffee?

Coming out of "Wally World" a few days ago, I sat my cup of coffee on the rear bumper of our pickup while putting stuff in the back. The wind promptly blew it off, spilling it all over the parking lot, it seemed.
After uttering a few choice phrases, I headed home and thought about the wind. How many times I've had to cancel a target sight-in because of it. I also pondered on my 4 tours of duty here while serving actively......and how many days, weeks, months and years of working out on that flightline in 40 mph winds.
By the time I got home, minus my coffee, I couldn't help but wonder why anyone would want to build a nuclear powerplant here.
Yes, we could argue safety issues, and Areva doesn't have that good of a track record, including the recent leakage in France. I heard someone say just a couple of weeks ago, "So????? Nobody's perfect."
Well...........with nuke power, they'd BETTER be, eh? Wouldn't ya' think?
But putting all that aside, I can openly proclaim from 36 years of being around here...........if there's ANYTHING Idaho is NOT short on, it's WIND!
I don't understand why there isn't a real push to scrap this nuke plant idea, and go to wind power, like that guy up along the freeway.
How often do you start a camping or fishing trip, try to play a round of golf, wash/work on your car, try to sight-in a new rifle, or just make it from the store back to your truck, where the wind isn't blowing to some degree? You've seen the tree branches all over the streets, lights going on and off, piles of sagebrush blown high against stock fences.
There's NO shortage of wind here............AND it's FREE! GOD provides wind, and even the IRS hasn't figured out how to tax it (Leastwise, not yet anyway.) Wind generators are clean, safe, and are right at home here in Idaho.
Oh, no doubt, we'll probably have this plant shoved down our throats whether we want it or not, and without even being able to vote on it either, because people don't seem to count for very much in this county.
But, next time you're out and see the tops of the trees bending, and grass alongside the highway waving at you, ask yourselves, "What is the REAL purpose being this upcoming "nuclear marvel"................necessity? Really? Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Mike:
There will be a meeting at Moxie this Thursday at 7. I really hope you will be able to attend. We will be easy to spot---we are the folks with all of the paper/research. Karen Martin, senior lady, midea, Beau and others will be there (as it stands now).
I agree with you 100% on this. The folks we have elected allow anything into our county in the name of money. They also do not listen to what the people want. Idaho gets some of the nuclear waste of the world right now and I guess that some feel it is not a problem, which is not correct. I could/would see things in a different light if someone could say what we are going to do with all of this waste. Add to that water useage and it is just a bad thing for this area. Plus, a great many of us DO NOT want this in our backyards. I hope that our elected official listen because if not, I will lead the recall on each and every one of them. Enough is enough with garbage industry in our area and this state. We should use the wind and sun since both are readily available here almost all of the time. AEH and Mr. G. should be run out of town. Nothing good will come of this.
I wonder what kind of a "free ride" Elmore County and Idaho will give this guy to build here. He will be in with Micron and the rest of them I am sure. More Government "free" money between tax breaks and the subsidy this group will get. Free money..."aint" the US great?
You are so right, Mike and Opinion Missy. I would love to see huge wind farms here. For all the practical and sensible reasons the two of you have mentioned, and one for me, personally: ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite toys was a hand-held wind mill that I blew into to make it move. I thought then, and I believe now, that wind blowing in the windmills are absolutely beautiful. I could stare for hours.
Do they make those children's wind mills anymore?See you Thursday.
7:PM at Moxie, Thursday night..........I'll jot that on my calendar and will definitely plan to be there!
How can I find out who needs to be tared and feathered for this one? It's high time someone listened to the peaple who have to live down wind from this stuff. I guess everybody else got to say not in my back yard. What othter sites were surveyed and why didn'tthey select those places Did they have the backing of their elected. We elected these folk to speak for us, if they can't maybe we need a new voice. Can we get a posting of times and dates where like minded people can get togather?

Some of us will be meeting at Moxie Java on American Legion on Thursday (8/21) at 7:00. Both sides of the fence could be represented at this meeting. We bring the research we have and sit around and talk. It is a pretty good way to get the "word" out. Watch the Banter Box as well for information because we plan these things in advance with the hope that more people will turn out. You are more than welcome.
As far as our elected officials go, they have been selling the citizens and the town/county out for a long time. Nobody wants to say "no" to anything for fear of not being reelected or sued. It makes me wonder how some of what we have can sleep at night. You are correct, change is needed. Hope you can make it to Moxie. You will be able to tell who we are because we have folders and folders of stuff and there should be at least 8 of us there on Thursday. We look forward to meeting you!
It was good to meet you all last night. That one guy was a fairly smooth talker, would probably make a good used car salesman or politician. I still stand steadfast in my position, though..............it needs to get put on a BALLOT and let the people decide, and will say that at this upcoming town meeting, whenever that is.
Even if councilman Schroeder IS correct about this term's council being better listeners, I maintain that this nuclear issue is way too big, to be decided by a small panel of the "elite." It effects us ALL and should be decided by the majority.
If the council doesn't want that, and should they decide to try to soft-talk and slip it through quietly, I WILL get a public letter in to the editor and make sure the whole town knows about it.
Mike:
You were right on the money with Biden. Have a great weekend.
OpinionMissy...........Biden was a natural choice for Obama. The best thing a Presidential hopeful can do, is make sure his number 2 man is worse than HE is......that way, he can be pretty sure nobody would ever try to have him impeached or assassinated.
Point in reference, Bill Clinton was impeached for his lying to Congress about the affair with Monica, but notice how nobody really pushed for his REMOVAL............We would have been stuck with Gore, and everyone knew it.
Of course, if the Obama/Biden ticket is defeated in November, we won't have to endure either one of those bums.
Have a great weekend yourself. Talk to you later.
Hello, I'm kinda new at this. I agree with all the above. My husbend and I have been to a council meeting, on a different matter. He has lived in this town for 50 year's now and I could not believe the cold mind set of the council pannell. They have there mind's maid up even before they hold the meeting's, they would not even respond to my husbend's questions or Ideas.
We feel the potential for a wind farm here is wonderful. But would our little town even benefitt from it or is it to be shipped of to California and surronding state's??? But first we need to get some new alive blood in our town.
Wich would give us more concideration as to haveing mind's of our own to think with. Yes the Power plant should be put before all of the fine people of Elmore county to make that dicision as to a nucular power plant so close to whare we live eat sleep and play. Just my Idea.
Welcome to the fight, Green Eyed Lady............we need more clear thinkers around this town. New councilman Geoff Shroeder assured me the other night that this is going to be a more "receptive" council than ever before................they're gonna have to CONVINCE me of that, but I'll try to keep an open mind...and we WILL go public with this if they try to quietly sneak this through. It needs to be voted on.
