Made Sense To Me

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me that most of the problems we were dealing with at the time, was because John Wayne died.

"Say what??"

He went on to explain "just as a for instance"......hostage taking became fashionable by the Iranians just AFTER the "Duke" had passed away. (Remember the Ayatollah). Now, I happen to be a HUGE John Wayne fan, but had to chuckle at his remarks.

"Laugh if you want to Mike, but listen to this hypothetical scenario...............suppose you were a Russian fighter pilot......."

"Ok.....I'll suppose that....."

"Here you are, flying a MIG-25 over the Bering Sea, on your way to nuke the White House. Secret mission. You're flying low, over the waves to avoid radar tracking, and as you enter U.S. air space, you're still hugging the terrain to avoid detection."

"Ok, I'm still with you....."

"You crest a northwest mountain range and as you do, you see this great big guy on a horse. He's got a patch over one eye, a Colt in one hand and a Winchester in the other, reins of his horse in his teeth. Because he is WELL known the world over, you immediately know who he is, and what he'll do if you keep coming!

What are you gonna do, Mike.........press on and get your butt kicked, or turn that MIG around and go home, pilgrim?

...........made sense to ME!..........

I think there was a moral in that story, because there WAS a time in America, when we HAD that kind of respect from the rest of this planet. There was actually some backbone in Washington D.C., and except for the hippies, not all that many folks looked at things through rose colored glasses. (Actually, on things like the Vietnam fiasco, the hippies WERE right).

Seems like forever ago, but a LOT of things made sense to me back then. In a way, I'm glad the "Duke" isn't around here anymore. So is HE, most likely.

OOPS...........my deepest regrets if I've somehow offended any Iranians out there.

It's hard to say anything against someone who believes in John Wayne that much. The Duke was (is) as American an icon as you could ever find. I think that the world's opinion of us has changed over the years; however, frankly it wasn't that great even when John Wayne was alive. Yes, it certainly has gotten a lot worse in recent years; I wonder if the Duke really could make a difference now.

What I'd like to do is to thank those Americans who are out there now, representing our country and in daily contact with the people of the nations which like or dislike us.

Our military servicemen are overseas in many different countries, not only the ones where people shoot at our troops daily, and they are representing us as well as anyone could. Though they aren't perfect, no one is. I think John Wayne would be proud of them. I know I am.

John Wayne was a draft-dodger. He kept out of WWII by having his movie producer buddies plead he was "more valuable" in cowboy movies.

He might also have been too old. Born in 1907, John Wayne would have been 34 when Pearl harbor happened. Enlist/draft age has been 18 to 27 for as long as I can remember.

I went through Marine Corps boot camp in 1966 at the age of 18, and there is no way a 34-year-old would have made it.
