Rocket Launch

Well, I've been persuaded to start my own Blog, so here goes:
My nickname "Bazookaman," which many of you have read in some of the different articles, comes from my old job in the Marine Corps fom 1966 to 1969. Yes, that's a real bazooka you see in my profile photo, a genuine M-20 from the Vietnam War era, identical to the one I used in 1967 and 68, from Camp Evans to Khe Sanh. Don't anybody panic out there. This one has been demilitarized as per the ATF, and the 3.5 inch diameter rockets haven't been available for it since the mid 70's..........it's a wallhanger now.
I got out of the Marines in '69, worked a few dead end jobs. (There are surprisingly no openings for ex-bazookamen in the civilian job sector) and at the the urging of an old high school buddy, joined the Air Force in '71 to learn a viable trade. Spent most of my career as an F-111 Crew Chief. Stationed here 4 times, and retired here.
Throughout most of my life, I've never been overly concerned with politics, but having grown up in the 50's and 60's, I remember distinctly what America once was, and refuse to just "accept" what it's turning into.
I've written extensively to the Statesman, the Mountain Home News, to Senators, Congressmen and even the White House occasionally (job security for the janitors there who empty the wastebaskets)!
Some see me as some kind of radical. If so, I'm at least in pretty good company, (most of the men who penned our Constitution would be considered eccentric by today's standards). If it's possible for my writing to accomplish ANYTHING, it is to get folks thinking about what's going on around us, because one lone individual cannot affect change by himself.
For me anyway, the most frightening thing I see on television is the Late Night Show, when Jay Leno does his "Jaywalking" segments. Most of the people he talks to, are in the age group of tomorrow's leaders; some of them COLLEGE students. Funny stuff, until you really think about it.
So much has changed. In the 60's, I watched Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle hit home runs without the aid of steroids for less than $100,000 per year.
In the 50's, we got into the theater for a quarter, saw TWO feature length films, separated by at least 2 cartoons, and our screen heroes weren't being busted every other week for drugs and other scandals.
In the 50's, grass was something you walked on, and coke was something you drank.
A 1963 Chevrolet Impala 2-door hardtop cost less than $2800, carried 6 adults, luggage (including a FULL SIZE spare tire) and was still running 20 years later, if you wanted to keep it that long.
There was ONE heavyweight champion.
Almost everything we bought was made HERE, and we NEVER heard "For English Press 1" over the telephone.
There is good and bad about having grown up when I did. The good part is having lived the "Roy Rogers" and "American Grafitti" period. The downside is that, unlike folks in the 25 to 40 age group, the deterioration of our freedoms. values and way of life is much more vivid to me. If you're as old as I am, unless you're deaf, dumb or blind, you've GOT to be upset at what's happened to our country.
You see.....I KNOW things can be much better, because I've personally SEEN and LIVED it when it was.
I'll be writing articles on various subjects, based not upon what is shoved down our throats by the media, nor by theory........but from my own personal experiences over these past 60 years, and historical facts. Historical facts of course, are indisputable, because history is something we KNOW has happened, and can happen again if we aren't looking for it. Hi there...
I saw a similarity between your online comments to letters to the editor; so I thought it was you. As you know, you and I differ a bit, but I definitely respect your thoughts. Welcome to your own blog!
Thank you, Senior Lady. Incidently, we're all SUPPOSED to differ to one degree or the other, that's what makes life interesting! I'm honored that you are the first one to respond!
Way to go with the new blog! Like "senior lady", I don't agree with some of your thoughts but, hey, it keeps life interesting that we all do not think alike. Congratulations and I will try to visit more frequently to keep up with your writing.
Karen
Thanks Karen...........and I'll be writing my first actual article shortly!
Hey Bazookaman I thought I would leave a little not here too.
I have heard of the times you speak of from my grandparents. Grandma used to tell me how crazy I was to be a smoker in this time period for how much cigarettes cost. I know things are much different these days! Mom's and Dad's are so busy making sure Junior has a life better than we had and I think we forget who we are and how we became this way.
I am just as guilty as the next guy of that. Here is a surprise, my mom didn't do alot of hugging when I was a kid and my dad would have been considered pretty self absorbed when I was growing up, so it is a destinct possibility that my sister and I raised ourselves and neither one of us have ever been locked up, or committed crime. We were teased in school and we never brought a gun and tried to shoot the place up.
I would have to say that this new touchy feely, medicated generation we've become has produced a big bunch of pansies. No offense to anyone but seriously.
I'm dating a guy who was in the military and he was telling me about the stress cards they hand out in boot camp now. You're supposed to be able to hold up this card if the drill sergent is stressing you out and they are supposed to back off.
I guess this is what happens when the Flower Children get into office, free love and hugs right? Make love not war. Lets get rid of all things that can be dangerous and plant a tree or flower!!! Mean while the rest of the world sees this and considers us weak.
Just my thought, sorry it got a little wordy.
Stress card, eh???????
I went through Marine Boot Camp in 1966. If somebody in my platoon would have held up some kind of "stress card", our D.I. would have beat him half to death! You'd be doing push-ups till your arms were gone!
I don't brag about this, but I went to Galileo High School with O.J. Simpson, grew up in the Potrero Hill District of San Francisco........a very rough part of down. Most of us ran with gangs, including me.
Even back THEN.......nobody brought a gun to school. Values were different though. You settled arguments after school with a left hook and a right uppercut.
I assume from your writings that you are probably not more than about 20, and if this is so, I especially commend you ...........MOST young people don't have the perception you do. We HAVE in fact, become a nation of pansies, and yes........don't think for a moment the rest of the world hasn't picked up on that.
There's been too much sacrifice since 1776, to just roll over and give it all away, which is what's happening, and the rape will be complete unless the people in this country wake up and put a stop to it. I can't do it by myself, but CAN perhaps, reach a few through my blog, who will in turn, reach a few more.
When you do NOTHING, it's the same as saying......"here's the key, help yourself."
would you be opposed to me sharing your blogs? You would get your credit of course, I feel that if you only have a blog here you're not reaching your full potential.
Let me know
Not at all.......please feel free.
Thanks
